Many people were shocked when distinguished professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., the head of the W. E. B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Studies at Harvard, was arrested by a Cambridge cop as he struggled to enter his own home because the front door had apparently jammed (Ebony, October 2009). Charged with disorderly conduct, Gates was released the same day. This raises questions about racial profiling. What are your preconscious reactions when you see Hispanic youth? Hmong workers? Caucasian police? People from the Middle East? Other racial groups?
